Aircraft can operate by visual flight rules (VFR) or by instrument flight rules (IFR). Pilots flying under VFR assume responsibility for their separation from all other aircraft using "see and avoid" separation criteria. Flights under IFR are guided and kept apart from one another by air traffic control, whereby traffic must be known to air traffic control.
