Paragliders, delta gliders, rigid wing hang gliders, electric hang gliders

Airspace users in this category have the right of way over other airspace users, except for balloons, and only need an “out” function to be electronically visible to others. The FOCA is exploring the ability to accept a digital paraglider registration transmitted via ADS-L, as an alternative to attaching the number to the fabric of the glider. The VKZ will require a change to implement this, and it is currently not known which devices will receive a software upgrade for this functionality.

There are thousands of FANET and FANET+ users. The traffic data is already used in the Open Glider Network (OGN) and for Search & Rescue purposes. The goal of the following recommendation is to ensure the interoperability and electronical visibility to other aircraft categories.

Technology recommendation:

1. FANET+ with ADS-L out

FANET+ (FANET plus FLARM) devices with ADS-L out are reccommended, to increase air-to-air interoperability with other aircraft categories.

A FANET+ device without ADS-L out is not visible to traffic with ADS-L devices, respectively, only if the signal is re‑broadcasted via a ground station.

The better the maneuverability of the aircraft (electric motor, 3‑axis controlled), the more important it is to receive information about other traffic: a device capable of ADS-L in/out should be considered.
