Liquids
Switzerland applies European regulation regarding liquids in carry-on baggage. It is important that passengers check the website of the airport and follow their airline’s instructions.
From Friday 26 June 2026, new provisions regarding liquids in hand luggage apply at Zurich Airport. For further information, please visit the Zurich Airport website and check your airline’s guidelines.
For the past few years, following items are allowed in carry-on baggage:
- containers with liquids, aerosols or gels of a maximum capacity of 100 ml (1 dl). The containers (tube, can, bottle) must loosely fit in a transparent and resealable plastic bag (e.g. freezer bag) of maximum 1 litre capacity. Per person one plastic bag is allowed.
- containers of all sizes with liquids, which are required during travel due to medical or dietary reasons (e.g. baby food).
- duty-free items of all sizes, which were acquired at a Swiss/EU/EFTA airport or on board of a Swiss/EU/EFTA plane, provided the respective sales receipt can be presented, and the items are sealed in an untampered plastic bag. Only open the plastic bag at the end of your journey!
Introduction of CT scanners
A new generation of equipment (computed tomography scanners) has recently been developed and certified for use in airport security checks. The use of this equipment allows passengers to carry containers with a capacity of up to 2 litres in their hand luggage. Zurich Airport has introduced this technology.
The use of this technology is becoming more widespread but is not yet standard practice: the outbound leg of a journey may be subject to different regulations to the return leg, depending on the equipment used at the airports. Furthermore, in the case of a flight with a stopover where the passenger undergoes security checks again, these checks may differ from those at the airport of departure.
Notice
Only put items in your carry-on baggage which you need during the journey. Go to the airport early, in order to allow enough time for security checks. For certain liquids in the checked baggage restrictions apply. In case of doubt contact your airline.
