Air Traffic Control and Airspace

Zurich Tower

Air traffic service is responsible for a safe and efficient handling of air traffic.  In order to facilitate this task, the airspace is divided into sectors and classes whereby different rules apply to the traffic flying to and from the Swiss airport or crossing the Swiss airspace.

Airspace classes differ in terms of requirements for air traffic services, flight rules, radio operation, cloud distances as well as the minimum visibility. In addition, usage of airspace is prioritised based on the civil or military activity undertaken.

AVISTRAT-CH

Switzerland's airspace and aviation infrastructure (air traffic management infrastructure and aerodromes) is a system that has grown over decades and has been repeatedly and incrementally modified throughout that period. Flying in this fragmented airspace has become increasingly complicated and challenging. New demands on airspace have emerged recently, such as drone operation.
