Introduction of U-space in Switzerland

• 1. Am I required to use U-space services?

  Yes, if you are flying your drone in a U-space airspace and it weighs more than 250g. The "For operators" page explains how to use U-space services.

• 2. Will I have to pay to use U-space services?

  Each USSP is free to set the prices for its services. However, the FOCA expects that prices for mandatory services will not be excessive.

• 3. Can I submit an application to introduce a U-space airspace?

  Yes. The process for introducing U-space airspaces in Switzerland is largely similar to the existing process for making airspace changes, which states that a person, a group of persons or an organisation may apply for the designation of a U-space airspace. The FOCA can also submit an application. The designation can be requested for various reasons, but is mainly intended to serve the safety of people and objects in the air and on the ground. The process for establishing U-space airspaces in Switzerland is described in the Airspace Change Process guideline, which will be published on this page in summer 2023.

• 4. How do I find a suitable USSP?

  The FOCA publishes a list of USSPs certified in Switzerland on its For operators web page. Drone operators are free to choose their preferred USSP from this list. At the moment, there are no USSPs certified to operate in Switzerland.

Network identification service

• 1. Who are authorised users?

  Authorised users can use the network identification service to identify drone operations in real time. These users include:

  • USSPs drone operators
  • competent authorities (e.g. FOCA) 
  • enforcement agencies (e.g. police)
  • the public

• 2. What information is shared via the network identification service?

  The following information is made available via the network identification service (list is non-exhaustive):

  • the drone operator's registration number (the number all drone operators receive following their mandatory online registration) and the aircraft's unique serial number
  • the position of the drone 
  • flight altitude 
  • the aircraft's route and speed
  • geographical position of the drone operator or the launch point
  • emergency status 
  • the time at which the messages were generated.

  It is important to note that no personal data is shared at any time.
