Switzerland has over 80,000 registered drone operators and the number is growing all the time. Where can I fly my drone? And where not? The Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) is today launching its #FlyDronesSafely campaign to remind drone pilots of the rules and raise awareness of the dangers.
Nature reserves
In general, flying drones over nature reserves is prohibited in order to protect the sensitive ecosystems and the animals living there. You may fly your drone in these areas only if you have a permit from the relevant cantonal authority. See the drone map for contact details.
Festivals and events
Gatherings like sports events, festivals and concerts provide many incredible moments worth capturing. And what better way to do so than with breathtaking aerial shots? But remember: flying over an assembly of people is only permitted with authorisation from the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA). Apart from that, you must always maintain a safe distance from bystanders. Follow the rules and play it safe.
Reminder: An assembly of people is defined as a gathering where people are so close together that it is practically impossible for an individual to move away from the crowd or avoid the drone.
Helicopters
Helicopters always have priority. Drone pilots are responsible for maintaining a safe distance from manned aircraft. If you see or hear a helicopter, you should land your drone and wait until the airspace is clear again.
