Safety Risk Management

Safety and risk management (SRM) is a steering and control tool which enables a continually high safety standard in the key areas of flight aviation technology, flight operation and infrastructures to be maintained.

The FOCA proactively seeks to ascertain risks and gradual trends that could lower the general safety level, in order to counteract these with suitable measures.

The FOCA has set up a special safety and risk management section to address this task. The section runs and updates a risk database using a safety management system (SMS) and coordinates risk assessment across the individual technical areas of expertise (aircraft, flight operations, flight safety and infrastructure). This database will systematically collect information relating to incidents and inspections from FOCA experts as well as from many other partners.

The SRM section analyses this data by means of a detailed assessment scheme and issues recommendations on safety measures or response options to the safety divisions concerned or to the office management. In addition, the SRM section is the coordination point for contacts with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau and with DETEC's aviation safety officers. Data is also exchanged at international level with organisations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Eurocontrol. The exchange of safety-related information will help people to learn from others' experiences and thus to be proactive in taking preventive measures.

The SRM area has a strategic function and reports directly to the management. It supports and advises the director in the coordination and handling of all safety-related aspects in the FOCA's activities.
