Statistics make it possible to obtain a detailed overview of Swiss civil aviation. They include figures on airports, airlines and data on personnel and services. Furthermore, they report on aircraft movements, passenger numbers and cargo volumes by destination and provides key indicators on the number of kilometres flown, fuel consumption and accidents.
The Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) is part of the Swiss statistical system ‒ a network of approximately 40 federal offices and other institutions that are subject to the Federal Statistics Act. The majority of cantons and several larger towns and cities have their own regional statistical services.
We have an obligation under the Federal Statistics Act to maintain professional independence and impartiality in the production and dissemination of official statistics. Statistical data supports the political process by providing a foundation for informed public debate, policy and decision-making.
The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) plays a coordinating role at federal level as a centre of expertise and hub in Switzerland's decentralised data ecosystem.
The Swiss Federal Statistical Office publishes since 2003 the data about the civil aviation. The statistic is based on data collected by the FOCA, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau and the air traffic control Skyguide.
