Basel-Mulhouse international airport is located on French territory. Its organisation and operation are governed by an international treaty between Switzerland and France.
The country's international airports connect Switzerland to Europe and the global centres of air traffic. This means that their infrastructure must allow airlines to handle the traffic generated on the free market in competition with other European airports. Where there is sufficient capacity, private aircraft may also be able to use an international airport.
