Aircraft maintenance personnel must undergo specific training courses comprising theoretical and practical elements in order to obtain an aircraft maintenance licence (AML). The training period lasts two to five years, depending on the licence type and category. There is both a practical exam and a theory exam at the end of the training programmes.

Conditions for the issue or transfer of a license by the FOCA

The FOCA can only issue or transfer a licence to a person with Swiss citizenship or who is employed in a maintenance organisation approved by the FOCA.

In order to obtain a Part-66 licence or a licence extension, training as specified by EASA (Part-66) is required. Further information on how to obtain a category B1 or B2 licence can be found under the following link:

Part-66 | EASA

In areas that are not covered by EU regulations or which are not otherwise regulated by the EU, national certificates exist for specialists in:

  • Tinsmith work
  • Composite work
  • Wood/fabric work
  • Work on mechanical and electrical components

These are based on the Ordinance on Aircraft Maintenance Personnel (AMPO; SR 748.127.2) and the applicable guidelines (service bulletins).
